Nadowli (UWR) Oct. 18, GNA - President John Agyekum Kufuor has expressed worry about the reluctance of Ghanaian doctors to work in deprived areas and said government was determined to improve on the situation.

"It is a pity that most of the Ghanaian trained medical officers have refused to work in the rural areas," the President told the Chiefs and people at Nadowli in the Upper West region on Sunday.

He announced that two out of 20 new Cuban medical officers who had arrived in Ghana would be posted to the Nadowli District Hospital. Naa Babawini Sando II, paramount Chief of the Kaleo Traditional Area, said an acute shortage of doctors in the Upper West Region was impeding healthcare delivery in the area and appealed to the government to post doctors and other paramedics to the region.

"Nadowli for a long time now has been without a medical doctor and I wonder what will happen if we get serious health problems here," he said.

He commended health professionals in the district for continuously organizing anti HIV/AIDS campaigns, as well as raising the awareness on other health problems in the Region and called for more support to bolster their efforts.
