Suhum, (E/R) Nov. 2, GNA - The Government is continuing with negotiation for improved salaries, allowances and health delivery arrangements for teachers in the country.
It is also promoting the establishment of production units as attachment to technical institutions to enhance the practical context of delivery and maintaining of graduating students.
The deputy Minister for Education, Youth and Sports, Mr Joe Donkor who announced this at the 40th anniversary celebration and speech and prize-giving day of the Suhum Technical and Secondary School at Suhum on Saturday, said these were among a number of measures the government is taking to enable technical institutions to meet their unfolding challenges, The theme for the celebration was: " 40 years of secondary, technical education: achievements, challenges and the way forward." Mr Donkor said under the measures, new syllabuses are ready for distribution to all Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) to reflect more intensive vocation-oriented courses.
He said technical training institutions will be encouraged to participate in the implementation of the Government's Skills Training and Employment Placement programme.
Mr Donkor noted that the demand of the unfolding globalisation era, there was the need for the Government to lay enhanced emphasis on technical, vocational education and the lnformation Communication Technology(ICT) education.
He commended the school for its achievements and hoped the school would continue to maintain the high educational standards and even improve its quality of education.
According to him the school, for the past 40 years had achieved impressive results through the commitment and dedication of the school's Board of Governors, and staff with the support of the Parent Teacher Association(PTA).
Mr Donkor said the school's capacity to continue with its good work will depend on a sizeable core of its experienced and dedication of the tutors.
The Eastern Regional Minister, Dr Francis Osafo Mensah said the government recognises education as an indispensable tool for accelerated socio-economic development of the nation.
The Government, he said, will support pragmatic reforms that will make educational system in the country meaningful and relevant to the national goals and aspirations.
To ensure quality education, the Minister said, that the government continues to allocate a sizeable proportion of the national budget to the educational sector every year.
He called on students to desist from all acts of violence and indiscipline that have the tendency to obstruct the development of their schools, which he said, will jeopardise their future careers. ln his annual report, the Headmaster of the school, Mr Joseph Addo-Larbi said the level of discipline in the school has improved remarkably, which made it possible to achieve high academic standards over the years.
He appealed to parents and stakeholders in the school "not to lose heart" when disciplinary measures are taken against their wards. He said the school scored 98.3 per cent in last year's SSSCE examinations.
Mr Addo-Larbi said the school is to construct a multi- modern Assembly Hall complex with a seating capacity of 2,000 and would also establish a Production Unit with the technical department. He therefore, appealed to the Ministry of Education, the District Assembly and the Older Students Association for assistance to undertake these projects.
The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, Rev. Ama Afo Blay chaired the function at which prizes were awarded to deserving students, staff and workers of the school.
Earlier, the Navy Cadet Corp of the school was inaugurated
