Govt's legacy will be good governance-Kufuor

President John Agyekum Kufuor on Monday, said government's legacy for Ghanaians after its tenure of office would be good governance.

He the refore called on chiefs and the people to join government to achieve this objective, adding " let us eschew practices that are subversive and inimical to good governance".

President Kufuor made the pledge when he paid a courtesy call on Togbe Afede XIV, Paramount Chief (Agbogbomefia) of the Asogli Traditional Area in his palace at Ho.

President Kufuor was in Ho to address the opening session of the three-day Volta Regional Investment Conference.

The Conference under the theme "Toward the Economic Development of the Volta Region" was organized by Compass Ventures under the auspices of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and the President's Special Investment (PSI) and the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council.

It is to showcase the enormous economic potentials and attract investors to invest in the region to help speed up the economic development of the region in particular and Ghana.

The Region has a very large expanse of land estimated at over one million hectares suitable for general agriculture and the cultivation of cereals, roots and tubers, vegetables, and fruits.

In addition it abounds in water bodies such as the sea, rivers, lakes, lagoons and creeks and produces tonnes of the nation's marine and fresh water fish more than any region in the country.

The region also has large deposits of gold, diamond, iron ore, chromite, lime, jasper, clay, salt and oil.

The region is also rich in the art and craft industry, quality kente, pottery and ceramics are produced as well as tourism potentials when exploited would earn substantial foreign exchange for the country.

President Kufuor said the rule of law would be the norm when Ghanaians live together in freedom and support government's policies and programmes, but any subversion acts inimical to society would not be tolerated and warned that the law would deal with anyone who attempts to subvert the democratic dispensation. He said chieftaincy becomes durable and its sanctity maintained when transition from a chief to another was done in peace and tranquility.

President Kufuor commended the chiefs and people of the Asogli Traditional Area for showing much respect to the institution of chieftaincy in the able manner they nominated, elected and installed a successor to the late Togbe Afede Asor.

He said without humility and respect for the power of the people, there could not be much trust in leadership and called on Togbe Afede to work in concert and co-operate with government for the benefit of the people.

Togbe Afede said the trust reposed in him by the people for his succession to the throne would be an impetus to foster new relationship between the people and government.

He therefore, called for a renew of the relationship between people in the Volta Region and government because the region lacked many basic social amenities and infrastructure for development, adding "the region cannot develop and move forward on its own without the support of Central government".

The Agbogbomefia of Asogli stressed the need for peace and tranquility in the country to attract investors and therefore, called on politicians to conduct their campaigns towards next year's general elections with decorum.
