The Greater Accra Region and the Fujian Province have signed an agreement to formally establish a sister province relations.

The pact follows a Memorandum of Understanding reached between the two parties in September last year to start a sister province bond.

Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Minister of Trade and Industry and Mr Zheng Xiaosong, Vice Governor of Fujian Provincial People’s Government signed the deal on the sidelines of the 19th China International Fair for Investment and Trade.

The partnership is to promote bilateral cooperation in areas such as education, agriculture, trade, industry, science and technology as well as culture and any other areas of interest to the two partners.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr Spio-Garbrah, who is leading Ghana’s delegation to the fair, said the two countries must work to encourage expansion of trade and projects that would lead to investments.

He said Ghana has an attractive investment code, good governance and respect for human rights and these should spur the Chinese business community to consider Ghana as a top priority in the drive to increase investment and joint ventures on the African continent.

“While here we will encourage expansion projects that will lead to investment of Chinese companies in Ghana,” Dr Spio-Garbrah said adding that there is also the need for the Chinese to take advantage of some sectors such as agro-processing and property development.

He said with a very good track record, Ghana stands ready to protect the investment of Chinese businesses.

Mr Zheng lauded the warm relations between Ghana and China and expressed the hope that the two countries would explore opportunities for their mutual benefit.
