Greed and intolerance are causes of conflicts in Africa - Dr Abaka

Esreso (Ash), Dec. 22, GNA - Dr Charlotte Abaka, United Nations Independent Expert for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Liberia, has attributed the emergence of conflicts and wars in Africa to greed, selfishness and the intolerance of other people's human rights. She said the greed and intolerance of some Africa leaders, "who were bent on coming to power and people bent on getting money through any means", led to infringements on political, civil, social and economic rights of the people.

Dr Abaka said in such circumstances, the people were denied the right to education, employment, health, protection and the right to choose to marry, which were degenerating into conflicts and wars. She was speaking on the topic: "Fundamental Human Rights - With Emphasis on Women" at the Opoku Ware Girls Vocational School at Esreso, near Kumasi on Thursday.

Dr Abaka said the United Nations charter on human rights, the African charter on human rights and the 1992 constitution, were all against inhuman treatment, domestic violence both in the form of physical, emotional or psychological.

She said economic, cultural violence, sexual violence and harassment and forced child labour still persisted in Africa, in spite of existing legal framework on them.

She called for the inclusion of culture of respect for human rights as part of the curriculum of basic schools, which must be made a compulsory subject at the teacher training colleges.

She urged heads of institutions to establish civic clubs in their institutions to enable the students learn more about their civic rights and resist the infringement on their rights and also tolerate other people's behaviour, religion and likes.
