Friends of Alhaji Muniru (FOAM), a group campaigning to get the Northern Regional Minister elected as Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency in the Northern Region on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been launched.

Mr Abubakari Yahouza, President of FOAM, speaking at the launch at Damongo on Saturday, said FOAM believed that Alhaji Mohammed-Muniru Limuna, the Northern Regional Minister holds the key to transform the Damongo Constituency, hence the decision to support him to win the seat.

Some of the personalities, who attended the launch, were Mr Sofo Azorka, Northern Regional Chairman of the NDC, some Regional Executives of the party, the Damongo Constituency Executives, some District Chief Executives from West Gonja, Gushegu, Central Gonja, Bole, and Yendi Municipality and party members from across the constituency.

Mr Yahouza said the launch of FOAM became necessary because “a group of young men with an abiding love for their constituency put their ideas together and realized that becoming friends with Alhaji Muniru was key and necessary” to bring change to the Damongo Constituency.

He described the Regional Minister as “able, courageous and yet a humble leader,” whose main objective to contest the seat, was to support the vulnerable and help alleviate poverty amongst the people.

He said members of FOAM, numbering about 1,000 in the constituency, have put their shoulders to the wheel to ensure that the objectives of the Regional Minister became a reality.

He said “our fight for this cause remains unwavering,” assuring that FOAM would engage in a decent campaign devoid of tantrums, invectives, accusations and violence.

Alhaji Limuna, who also spoke at the launch, endorsed the activities of FOAM and called for civility and unity to ensure a formidable force for victory.

He pledged to make a difference in politics at Damongo by working to improve the lot of the people.

He was not happy that the NDC could not increase its voter margin at the Damongo Constituency in the last elections and promised to work hard to ensure that votes garnered by the NDC at Damongo Constituency increases, to not only win the seat but also help the President to remain in power.

Mr Azorka urged party executives and members to work hard to ensure victory in the 2016 general election.

The Damongo Constituency seat is currently held by the NDC and the Regional Minister faces a strong challenge from the incumbent Member of Parliament, who defeated him (Minister) at the last primaries.
