Group rejects Mahama's appeal; Otabil ads will continue

Education Watch, the group behind the radio advertisements of Pastor Mensa Otabil’s sermons on free education has rejected an appeal from President Mahama to stop airing the advertisements.

Last week Pastor Mensa Otabil asked President Mahama to call to order surrogates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who are airing the tapes to score political points.

In a second statement released Sunday evening, the John Mahama 2012 campaign team said President Mahama has not endorsed the advertisements neither is he aware of any surrogates affiliated to him as being behind the promotion of such tapes.

Communications Director Hannah Tetteh in an interview with XYZ News said the President wants his campaign message to focus on the "Better Ghana Agenda".

But Executive Director of Education Watch Doe Lawson say they don’t need the President’s approval to discharge their civic responsibilities.

“We did not seek their permission before we did what we did, we did it in good conscience and for the good people of this country”.

"We have been further encouraged to carry out what we have done extensively for the benefit of the Ghanaian people and for the statement that has been issued and particularly the preaching that took place at ICGC attributed Pastor Otabil where he was asking people to exercise their sovereignty," Doe Lawson said.
