‘Gunman’ jailed two years for possessing weapons

An unemployed young man has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court for possessing ninety eight ((98) 9mm luger ammunition without authority.

The ammunition were found in the possession of Umar Musah at Weija on December 6.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector K. Adu, the police are also on the heels of Medalock Oheneba.

Appearing before a court, presided over by Aboagye Tandoh, Umar admitted the offence and was convicted on his own plea.

The judge accordingly sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment to serve as deterrent to others.

Earlier, Chief Inspector Adu told the court that the accused was arrested for a similar offence although he was not convicted some time ago.

He stated that the reprehensible behaviour of the accused must be discouraged.

Narrating the facts of the case, C/Insp Adu said the complainants are police officers while the accused is an unemployed residing at Zongo Gaskia.

He said on the fateful day, the Regional Police Command received information that two young men were selling the said ammunition at Weija.

C/Insp. Adu said a motorbike patrol team was deployed to the scene, adding that the police arrested the accused and his accomplice at the scene.

The senior police prosecutor stated that ninety-eight (98) 9mm luger ammunition and military trouser camouflage were found in a bag.

C/Insp. Adu disclosed that during the search, Oheneba was able to escape but Musah was arrested and transported to the police station where he admitted the offence in his caution statement.
