Gunshots scare school children and traders in Bawku

Bawku (U/E) Nov. 11, GNA - Two men suspected to have been involved in the firing of gunshots were on Wednesday arrested by the Police in Bawku. Children, who were on their way to school, were scared. Other people, who were preparing to start their business at about 0900 hours rushed back into their houses. Wednesday is a market day in Bawku. The Bawku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Musah Abdulai told GNA that the Police have arrested Rashid Bukari, a 26-year-old man dressed in a military jacket with 34 rounds of AK47 ammunitions and his companion, Justin Hado, 26 years, a Teacher at the Bawku Methodist Junior High School, in connection with the incident.

He said the suspects were in Police Custody for further investigations and would be dealt with drastically if found culpable. He warned those who were engaged in the violence to stop since the security men would not countenance such acts.

The MCE noted that the situation was quickly put under control and those who planned to use the market day to cause confusion and pandemonium so that they could achieve their bad motives of stealing from the traders and people had their plans dashed.

He commended the security agencies for the swift manner in which they acted to put the situation under control and appealed to them to continue with their good work.

The Bawku Municipal Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Cashman Blewushie stated that the Security Agencies were alert and would ensure that the market day went on smoothly although some people had been too scared to do business.

There is a long-standing conflict between two ethnic groups - Kussasis and Mamprusis - and this boils over from time to time. The Government has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew in the Municipality.
