Sarah Kwabla, the 22-year-old university student who threatened to make public what she described as a secretly recorded video of the sexual intercourse she had with Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan, was on Thursday arrested and detained at the Airport Police Station in Accra, DAILY GUIDE can confirm.
She was charged with conspiracy to extort money but was later granted a self-reconnaissance bail and asked to report on Monday.
Ms Kwabla was said to have gone to the police station in the company of her mother and with legal representation.
Sarah Kwabla; her ex-lover Ekow Micah, a musician; and Osarfo Anthony, a journalist, are jointly charged with conspiracy to extort money and are likely to be processed for court early next week after the police caught Osarfo Anthony red-handed as he tried to extort an amount of GHc 25,000 from Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.
The Asamoah Gyan camp had lodged a complaint of extortion against Osarfo Anthony after he reportedly contacted them and demanded an amount of GHc 25,000 else he would publish what he said was negative evidence against the Black Stars captain in his dealings with Sarah Kwabla.
After Osarfo’s arrest, police investigations revealed he conspired with Sarah Kwabla, Osarfo and Ekow before he contacted the Gyan camp with his demands of money and threats of publication of negative stories.
Ekow Micah was invited by the police to help in investigations into the case but he got into further trouble when a substance suspected to be narcotics was found in his custody.
Ekow was sent to court over possession of narcotics and was remanded for two weeks pending further investigations.
Sarah Kwabla was also invited to help in the investigations and her statement was taken on Thursday.
The Gyan camp, after filing a complaint of extortion against Osarfo, feigned interest in the journalist’s proposal and actually asked him to put his proposals and demands into writing.
A copy of what looks like an undertaking signed by Osarfo during the extortion attempt and presented to the Gyan camp stated in part:
“In pursuance of our earlier verbal discussion with your client to stop publications on his alleged sodomy and or rape scandal with a lady by name Sarah Kwabla, the editorial board of GHBase.com, upon the signing of this agreement with you, officially consents never to publish any reportage on the said case.
“The client [Asamoah Gyan]therefore pays the publisher [Osarfo Anthony] an amount of GHc 25,000 with the obligation that should the site ever do any publication on the said allegation or give out any facts or evidence on the said case to any third party person for publication, reproduction or duplication, your client has the unequivocal right to sue the site and its publisher for criminal or civil tort – whichever case may be,” the document, signed by Osarfo Anthony on July 23, 2015, stated.
Pregnancy Vanishes
Though Sarah Kwabla had stated that the sexual intercourse she had with Asamoah Gyan in February this year was consensual and resulted in pregnancy, she popped up at the Airport Police Station on Thursday with a flat tummy when the supposed pregnancy was to have been about six months old.
A police source said Sarah had explained she had a miscarriage.
In June, Sarah changed her position on the alleged sexual encounter she had with Asamoah Gyan in February and told the police she was “raped” and “sodomised” by the footballer.
A paternity test scheduled to have been conducted on Tuesday, June 23 to ascertain whether or not Asamoah Gyan was responsible for the pregnancy did not come on because Sarah Kwabla did not honour the appointment, though part-payment for the cost of the test had been deposited at the medical facility.
Sarah said she secretly recorded her sexual encounter with the Black Stars captain in her apartment but had decided to make it public because her relationship with the footballer was not going the way she had envisaged.
The 22-year-old said because of the pregnancy, the Black Stars captain should get her a fully furnished apartment, a housemaid and a monthly amount of $1,000 for postnatal care.
The case was reported first to the Odorkor Police in Accra and after it was supposedly amicably settled, Sarah went to the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) and filed a fresh charge of rape against Gyan.
The Airport Police is handling the complaint of extortion which was said to have been captured on video when the journalist went for the money.
There are also some alleged audio recordings that captured Sarah Kwabla, Ekow Micah and Osarfo Anthony discussing how the Gyans should be approached with the story.
