Hajia Requests Tolerance, Patience From Ghanaians

A large number of women assembled at Alajo, a suburb of Accra on Saturday, when the NPP Women's Wing of the Central Ayawaso constituency was inaugurated.

There were no government vehicles around and the National Organizer of the party, Lord Commey remarked, 'The absence of government vehicles at the function goes to prove that the party is fulfilling its campaign message of separating party affairs from state ones.'

Although the function was a women's affair, men turned up in their numbers to give their support.

The arrival of Hajia Ramatu Aliu Mahama, wife of the Vice President had an electrifying effect on the women as many of them surged forward to usher her onto the grounds of the function. She responded to their cheers as she danced to music provided by Dagomba drummers.

When she mounted the podium to speak she was greeted with 'Maame oh dende, Maame oh dende', which is the way of children greet their mother in the Akan language.

She asked Ghanaians to be patient with the government as it continues with the task of bringing development to all. The change, which took place in December of 2000, was the work of God and so all Ghanaians should be tolerant and contribute towards the development of the country, she said. And patience is what enabled the NPP to reach where it has today.

The attraction of her speech was that after speaking in both Akan and Hausa, she was 'ordered ' by Dagomba women at the function to render it in Dagbani, which she obliged and returned to the podium.

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C Quaye, who was on his turf in Alajo, bemoaned the political and economic experiment to which Ghana was subjected for twenty years of the PNDC/NDC rule.

He promised that women would be accorded their due respect and position by the government of NPP because of their importance in society.

He explained to the women what the whole idea of reconciliation was about. He said it is necessary for the country to have those who meted out wicked deeds on their fellow Ghanaians to come out and apologize for such deeds. It is only through reconciliation that this can be possible, he said.

It was a melancholic moment when he suppressed his tears as he recalled how he and three of his brothers were arrested and detained unjustifiably for political reasons in the past. The shock, which their mother got, he said, led to her death.

Hajia Ramatu later shook hands with the executive officers of the newly inaugurated members of the wing.
