A deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Koku Anyidoho has slammed Information Minister Mustapha Hamid, describing his explanation that Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s trip to the UK for further medical attention is also to afford him an uninterrupted rest, as infantile and ridiculous.

According to Koku, what he finds so annoying in what he described as the government’s communication gaffe that has attended the commentary on the Vice President’s illness, is the comments by the Information Minister.

Mustapha Hamid has said the Vice-president going abroad will ensure he has the peace and tranquility to recover faster, an advantage he claimed Dr Bawumia will struggle to get in Ghana.

He explained that the Vice President’s reported illness could see relatives and friends thronging his Accra residence to sympathize with him and offer support.

“When he is in Ghana people will come from his village, from Walewale [and] wherever he is [and] the people will besiege [his residence]. “Normally, when you are out of reach you will have the peace to heal.”

But Koku Anyidoho who was the Communication Director at the Presidency under late President Atta Mills commenting on the matter on Okay FM Monday said Hon. Mustapha Hamid is an embarrassment to the Ministry of Information.

“If you’re lying you’re in a hurry to tell all kinds of tales and stories to hide something. Whatever they want to hide that is their problem, but they should respect the intelligence of Ghanaians. Mustapha Hamid is telling us that because the Vice President has to rest he has to leave the shores of Ghana at the expense of the tax payer to go and have his peace of mind, here in Ghana can’t he find a good place to rest?

“We’re not challenging the Vice President being flown abroad because he’s the Vice President but if you want to explain the issues, don’t insult our intelligence. Aren’t there many Ghanaians who stay here and recuperate. He’s the Vice President after all doesn’t he have access to the Peduase Lodge? he has access to the State House at Akuse and Akosombo. The Safe Houses that are dotted all over, even in Accra here the number of safe houses are many. The Vice President can stay there for one month and nobody will know that he’s in there. Mustapha Hamid’s explanation is worsening the case for government.”
