Handicapped Centre Opened At Wa

Wa (Upper West), 29 Oct. A centre to offer educational and vocational opportunities for multiple handicapped children, has been established at the Wa school for the blind. The centre, the first of its kind in the country, is being funded by the Hilton/Perkins programme of the United States with an initial amount of 500 million cedis for the first three years. Mr Ken Dabuo, acting upper west regional director of education, announced this at the opening of a two-week workshop for teachers of handicapped children at Wa. He said the centre is the outcome of an agreement between Hilton/Perkins and the ministry of education signed in May to support multiple disabled children especially those who are both blind and deaf. Among topics being treated at the workshop are definition of multiple impairment, effect of multiple impairment on learning and curriculum development.
