Handling of crash victims increases deaths

Road deaths could be avoided if crash victims were handled properly at the scene of the accident, according to the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) in the Western Region.

The NRSC, Ghana Red Cross (GRCS), the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority and the Ghana Ambulance Service (GAS) have joined forces to train drivers in first aid to avoid deaths from improper handling.

The initiative, which was announced by the Western Region Regional Manager, Alhaji Sumani Mbo, will educate personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) and accident squads at Axim, Bibiani, Enchi and communities in Sefwi to promptly report accidents.

He said the poor state of the roads in the region contributed to the high rate of accidents and appealed to the government to fix them in order to reduce fatalities.

The NRSC aims to halt the increase of fatalities and injuries by 2015 and reduce all such incidents by 50% by the year 2020.
