Haruna Iddrisu is the Minister of Education
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of all students amid the legal tussle over restrictions affecting Muslim students at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.
Speaking during the budget debate on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the Minister noted that concerns raised about limitations placed on Muslim students conflict with international human rights standards and provisions under Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, particularly Articles 33(5) and 26(1).
Democracy Hub joins Wesley Girls SHS religious discrimination suit
“There’s some ongoing debate on restrictions on Muslim students in Wesley Girls which conflicts with international human rights standards and even the standards expected of us in Ghana’s Constitution, particularly Article 33(5) and Article 26(1). I want to assure our colleagues that we have a duty to uphold the rights of every Ghanaian child and to uphold the rights of every Ghanaian citizen. No right is divisible, and we will not countenance any action by any person to deny any Ghanaian girl,” he stated.
The Supreme Court has also granted Democracy Hub leave to file a written address as a friend of the court (amicus curiae) in the high-profile case challenging religious discrimination policies at Wesley Girls’ Senior High School.

In its ruling on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the court further directed the school, the Ghana Education Service, and the Attorney General to file their responses to the plaintiff’s action.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed by Shafic Osman in December 2024.
He is challenging Wesley Girls’ policies that allegedly restrict Muslim students from observing key religious practices, including wearing the hijab, fasting during Ramadan, and other Islamic rites.
