Oheneba Adusei Poku, born Nana Osei Tutu-Poku on May 12, 1947, was a distinguished figure whose life was marked by academic excellence, legal expertise, and dedicated service to his nation and the Ashanti Kingdom. His journey began in Kumasi, Ghana, where he attended Methodist Primary and Middle Schools before moving to Prempeh College in 1961. At Prempeh College, he was guided by his senior brothers, which provided him with a strong foundation for his future endeavours.
Oheneba Adusei Poku's academic pursuits led him to the University of Ghana in 1968, where he studied law. He graduated in 1971 and was called to the Ghana Bar in 1972, following in the footsteps of his father, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II. His quest for further education took him to the United States, where he earned a Master's degree from Harvard Law School and a PhD in Law and Diplomacy from Tufts University's Fletcher School in 1977.
Upon returning to Ghana, Oheneba Adusei Poku joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he served with distinction in various African countries. His diplomatic skills were further recognized with a posting to the Ghanaian Embassy in Washington DC in 1985. However, his commitment to his heritage saw him enstooled as the 12th Akyempimhene in 1982, a role he balanced with his diplomatic duties until 1991, when he chose to focus entirely on his responsibilities as Akyempimhene.
The Akyempim stool, created by Opemsuo Osei Tutu in the late 17th century, is a unique princely stool of patrilineal descent, reserved for the sons and grandsons of the Golden Stool. As Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku was the head of the Kyidom and Domakwai Division of both the Kumasi Traditional Council and the Asanteman Council, holding the rank of an Omanhene (Paramount Chief).
Throughout his 42-year tenure as Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku was known for his diligence, humility, and loyalty to the Asantehene. His vast knowledge and experience made him an authority on traditional and chieftaincy affairs, often sought after for advice and guidance. His peaceful demeanor, imposing personality, and captivating smile endeared him to many.
