Dr Edward Omane Boamah was the Minister of Defence
The Ministry of Defence has paid a glowing tribute to the late Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, describing him as “an exceptional leader, a visionary, and a dedicated patriot.”
In a tribute read by a representative of the Ministry during the state funeral at Black Star Square on Friday, August 15, they highlighted Dr Omane Boamah’s vision for the Ghana Armed Forces.
His mission, they said, was “to have a modernised and expanded Ghana Armed Forces, responsive to the needs of the country, with highly motivated and happier troops, as well as committed Defence Civilian Staff, for nation building.”
“This was not just a declaration, but a mission he pursued with relentless passion,” the Ministry added.
According to them, under his leadership the Ghana Armed Forces was placed on a path to becoming a key player in national socio-economic development.
As part of the RESET Ghana Agenda, he championed the revitalisation of the Defence Industries Holding Company Limited (DIHOC), with a vision of expanding it into a Defence Industrial Development Corporation in partnership with the private sector.
“His dream was for DIHOC to spearhead Ghana’s industrial revolution, ensuring self-sufficiency in military production and reducing dependence on imports. Tragically, he was to receive the expert report on this transformative agenda just days after his untimely demise,” the Ministry noted.
The Ministry praised his inclusive leadership style, describing him as a leader who “believed in collective responsibility” and ensured that “every decision, whether administrative, operational, or logistical, was made with the full involvement of his management team.”
His respect for transparency, due process, and legal compliance, “set a standard for governance that will endure as part of his legacy,” it stressed.
The Ministry, commended the late Dr Omane Boamah for his strong support of major national initiatives, including the Feed Ghana Programme, the 24-Hour Economy, and the fight against illegal mining.
According to the Ministry, he directed military units to engage in farming to reduce food expenditure — a move they described as “a proof to his practical and innovative approach to problem-solving.”
They further highlighted his compassion and human touch, stating that, “Honourable Omane Boamah was a leader who cared deeply for people. He made time for everyone — from senior commanders and officers to soldiers and civilian staff alike. His humility, approachability, and dedication earned him the admiration and respect of all who worked with him.”
