He is not the general public - Kwesi Pratt shocked by military's 'love letter' to NPP PC

Veteran journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr has described a recent letter by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) cautioning against attacks on soldiers as a love letter.

Pratt, speaking on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana programme (June 12) said the tone and direction of the letter deflected from the real target of the caution, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NPP's Parliamentary Candidate for the Amenfi East Constituency in the Western Region, one Ernest Frimpong, at a meeting with small scale-miners suggested that the miners should challenge any unauthorized security personnel who tries to obstruct their activities.

He has since been arrested for the comments.

His comments triggered a statement from GAF warning against such attacks but the failure of the statement to mention him and his comments explicitly led to the army being critiqued widely on social media.

Pratt described the said comments as "annoying," adding: "this display of impunity is unpardonable and the worse part of it is that he is making this statement in the presence of a regional minister who partially confirms his statement.

"My shock is also deepened by the fact that in spite of this, the Ghana Armed Forces writes a love letter in which it creates the impression that members of the general public are those threatening to beat soldiers and the police.

"There is a name, Ernest Frimpong, Parliamentary Candidate of the NPP in the Amenfi East Constituency. He is not the general public, the regional minister is not the general public," Pratt stressed.
