Head master appeals to parents to exercise restraint

Sunyani, Sept 21, GNA - Mr Joseph Awuah, the Headmaster of the Sunyani Secondary School, has appealed to head teachers, teachers and parents to ensure that their candidates strictly follow laid down procedure during the selection of second-cycle institutions to avoid inconveniences during admissions.

Mr Awuah, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview on Monday, said much of the rumpus that has characterized the selection has been created by the carelessness on the part of prospective students who filled school selection forms with little regard for carefulness. "Students do not closely shade numbers attached to the school of their choice thereby making it difficult for the computer to select the right schools for them", he said.

Mr Awuah appealed to stakeholders in education to properly educate students to follow due process in the selection of schools, particularly as the new system is in place, to forestall similar occurrence in the future.

''Getting the school of one's choice is dependent on the type of school one chooses as well as the raw score obtained in an examination and not only on good grades.''

He said being the first of its kind to be introduced in the country, the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) was bound to have problems and appealed to parents to exercise restrain and support the new system.

Meanwhile, some students the GNA spoke with expressed mixed reaction on the new method of admission into senior secondary schools. While others welcomed the new system, others said it was unfair because those who performed well were denied access to schools of their choice.
