Sunyani, Jan 13, GNA - Mr Joseph Awuah, the Headmaster of Sunyani Secondary School, has appealed to people who donate books to schools to always consult the institutions on the type of books they need. He said sometimes books donated to schools were not relevant in terms of the topics the schools treat.
Mr Antwi said this when the Brong Ahafo Students Union on Thursday presented 150 boxes of books valued at 60 million cedis to the Brong Ahafo Regional Directorate of Education through the Regional Co-ordinating Council for distribution to deprived schools in the region.
The boxes contained 1,500 textbooks of various educational levels cutting across all subject areas and were made possible by Book Project of the World Bank Family Network based in the United States. The Headmaster said issues treated in the books were based on US topics that were different from those of Ghana. ''The school's library is full of such books and approval has been sought from the Board of Directors to burn them.''
Presenting the books Mr Jonathan Obour-Wiredu, the National President of the union, said the union had realized with concern that few students in the region made it to the tertiary level and this was a source of worry to members.
The union therefore decided to help deprived schools with books to improve the academic performance of students.
Mr Obuor-Wiredu said the union was working hard to bri ng more books and computers to be distributed to schools to enhance education. He appealed to Members of Parliament from the region, chiefs and heads of institutions to support the union financially to enable them do more for the schools.
Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Deputy Brong Ahafo Regional Minister who received the books on behalf of the Regional Directorate of Education, commended the students union for sharing the dream of the government in its bid to build the human resource base through education. He pledged that the Regional Co-ordinating Council would continue to collaborate with the union towards the achievement of its aims. 13 Jan 06
