Headmistress of BOSTEC appeals for infrastructure to boost free SHS

Mrs Doris Nanaa Marfo, the Headmistress of the Boakye Tromo Senior High and Technical School (BOSTECH) in the Tano North Municipality has appealed for infrastructural development in the school.

She said the school needs dormitories, additional classroom blocks, an ICT centre, modern library and sanitary facilities to be able to admit more students to benefit from the free SHS programme in the next academic year.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Duayaw-Nkwanta in the Ahafo Region, Mrs Marfo said the school could not cope with the congestion, and admitting more students in the next academic calendar would be difficult if the problems were not addressed.

She made this known when Mrs Freda Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Tano North constituency presented 100 bags of cement and 150 pieces of plywood to the school.

The MP is putting up a kitchen and a dining hall for the school.

Mrs Marfo said BOSTECH had 1,200 students made up of 684 boys and 483 girls, but had no administrative block, Assembly hall, school bus and a boys’ dormitory, adding that, the male students were being housed in a classroom converted into a sleeping place.

She said the girls’ dormitory and teachers’ quarters were not adequate and expressed concern over the school poor water system as well.

Mrs Marfo said the technical section of the school lacked tools and equipment and at the Visual Arts Department was obsolete.

She said the situation at the Home Economics Departments was appalling, and appealed for support from the general public to improve on the infrastructure to enhance effective teaching and learning.

Mrs Prempeh, who is also the Deputy Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection said the government was determined to ensure that the free SHS programme was sustained and benefit all Ghanaian children in public schools.

She advised the students to take advantage of the policy, concentrate on their books, and learn hard to justify the continuation of the programme, as the government addressed pertinent challenges confronting the implementation of the free SHS programme.

Mrs Prempeh said she would do her best to improve on the teaching and learning environment in the various public schools in the constituency, adding that, she would lobby to help address some of the challenges facing the school.
