Koforidua, May 02, GNA - The Eastern Regional Branch of Health Workers Group (HWG) comprising all category of health workers with the exception of medical practitioners at an emergency delegates meeting at Koforidua on Wednesday, decided to embark on an indefinite strike action with effect from Thursday, May 03.
The decision was taken in support of a resolution passed by the National Executive Committee of HWG last month calling for a nationwide strike action of the group.
It was to back their demand for the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the Government and the Group to resolve some distortions in the pay structure of health workers.
In an answer to a question from the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Raynous Ofosu Tinkorang of Health Service Workers Union of GTUC, explained that, HWG had honoured all the requirement for the resolution of industrial dispute under the labour law covering workers providing essential services.
He said the group had also complied with almost all the provisions under the new labour law but their employers had not played their expected role hence the current unfortunate situation. However when GNA visited the Koforidua Regional Hospital, work was going on as usual and one of the leaders of organized labour at the hospital who spoke to GNA under anonymity said leadership of the HWG at the hospital was yet to inform the management of the hospital of their decision to embark on a strike action.
