An 80-year-old man has died after the wall of a building collapsed on him at Gbullung, a farming community in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region.

The wall of the building collapsed after a recent downpour. The body of the deceased was transported to the hospital for autopsy and handed over to the family for burial.

The heavy downpour destroyed many houses in the Gbullung community, which led to the death of one person and two persons sustaining several injuries.

Alhassan Amina, 75, the wife of the deceased person who also sustained some injuries, is currently receiving treatment at the Tamale West Hospital.

A family member, Alhassan Issahaku, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, revealed that the two-bedroom apartment housed the deceased, his wife and their five grandchildren.

According to him, the grandchildren and the wife survived but the man could not.

He indicated that the incident has been reported to the National Disaster Management (NADMO) in the area but they are yet to pay a visit to the family.

“We are appealing to the NADMO and others to come to our aid because we don’t have anywhere to go after the heavy rains destroyed our home,” he said.

So far, the death toll resulting from the spillage of the Bagre dam, coupled with heavy rains in the Northern Region, has risen to six, with unconfirmed reports indicating that there could be more deaths recorded.

It is estimated that over 8,000 homes in the Northern Region have been badly displaced due to the spillage and heavy downpour.

Pupils can no longer go to school, farmers have lost their farms, while buildings and property have been destroyed.

The affected people are calling on government, NGOs, philanthropists and concerned individuals to come to their aid.
