About 82,920 enterprises are mobile businesses
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that 2,644,358 businesses are currently operating across the country, according to findings from the latest Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES).
Of this total, 1.87 million businesses, representing 70.6%, operate from fixed structures, while 693,748 (26%) are based in open spaces.
The remaining 3.1%, representing about 82,920 enterprises, are mobile businesses.
The survey showed that open-space enterprises alone employ over 922,000 people.
These businesses are heavily concentrated in the Greater Accra and Ashanti regions, reflecting strong urban demand and vibrant commercial activity.

Interestingly, nearly 80% of workers in open-space but fixed-location businesses are women, and an overwhelming 99.2% of these businesses are Ghanaian-owned.
Operational patterns also vary across regions. Nationally, 63.7% of open-space businesses operate at least six days a week, with Greater Accra (77.5%) and Ashanti (73.1%) recording the highest activity levels.
In the Northern Region, almost half (48%) of such businesses operate seven days a week.
Mobile businesses, though smaller in number, reinforce the contribution of non-traditional enterprises to Ghana’s economy, offering flexibility and sustaining local commerce.
