The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, on March 10, 2026, issued a caution to the newly sworn-in Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Baba Jamal.

During the swearing-in ceremony, Bagbin reminded Baba Jamal of statements he had made earlier, where he declared that he preferred serving as a Member of Parliament to help his people, rather than serving as a high commissioner in Nigeria.

According to Bagbin, those words would be used to hold him accountable.

He cautioned that if Baba Jamal fails to deliver on his promises to his constituents, he (Bagbin) would personally campaign against him in the next election.

Speaker Bagbin opens up about personal encounter with God

“That you want to serve them as a Member of Parliament and by doing so, serve Ghana. You don't want to serve Ghana as a high commissioner in Nigeria. I took note of those statements and I'm going to hold you as my son.

“He knows what I mean by saying that. It’s not the word of the general son I have been using for all of you. This one is different and he knows the importance of that because I will hold you accountable to the good people of Ayawaso East constituency," he said.

He further added that; “Serving them, you must and so I will focus on you on this floor to see how you perform in serving them. If you don’t, I can assure you I will be there to campaign against you in the next election."

Baba Jamal was sworn in as MP for Ayawaso East on March 10, 2026, after winning the by-election in the constituency.

His victory came after a controversial National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary, which was marred by allegations of vote-buying.
