High Court to rule on NUGS elections

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has filed a suit at the Accra High Court to determine the student body’s legitimate president and executives.

NUGS, together with Luqman Abubakari and one Emmanuel Boakye Yiadom, filed the case as plaintiffs on January 26, 2017.

Named as defendants in the suit are: Julian Cobbinah, Andrews Adjei, Akwasi Opoku Agyemang, Kenneth Sarpong, Betty Adjoa Eshun, Wahab Abdul Saliu, Isaac Nyame Mensah, Mabel Serwaah Acheampong, Adehokey Hubert Elorm and Nana Etwi Yeboah Amankwatia.

It will be recalled that after the NUGS congress of 2016, two leaders emerged, both claiming to be the lawfully elected president of the student body.

The plaintiffs are seeking the court to make a declaration that the plaintiffs, together with all other persons elected at the Congress held on the campus of Ideal College, Madina, Accra, are the true and proper officers-elect as officers of the 1st plaintiffs’ organisation (NUGS).

In addition, the plaintiffs are seeking an order directing the defendants from holding themselves out as duly elected National Union of Ghana Students’ executives.

The plaintiffs also want an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from holding themselves out as national officers of NUGS.

In addition the writ explains that the plaintiffs seek costs including legal costs.
