Adeiso (Eastern Region), 15 March '99 - The chiefs, assembly and unit committee Members, and opinion leaders along the Adeiso-Bawjiase road have called on the government to compel the Ghana Highway Authority, which has abandoned the rehabilitation of the road, to complete the work. The appeal was made at a joint meeting held at Danso by six assembly members with their unit committee members and chiefs from Danso electoral area in the West Akyem district, Nsuobri in the Ga district, and Akwabena, Awutu Fianko and Offadaa in the Awutu-Efutu-Senya district at the weekend. According to Mr Charles Aryah Addy, assembly member for Danso, the rehabilitation of the 10-kilometre road was awarded to the Ghana Highway Authority Maintenance Unit in 1989 but it abandoned the project after tarring about five kilometres stretch of it. He said several petitions and contacts made to the appropriate quarters to have the Highways Authority complete the project have proved futile. As a result of the bad state of the road, the few lorries which ply it charge very high fares. Mr Justin A. Awudi, assembly member for Nsuobri, said the people were contributing to procure about 200 treated wooden poles for an electrification project in the area. He said 30 poles have already been erected and appealed to the government for assistance for the town to be connected to the national grid.
