How Ghana's parliament celebrated Valentine's Day

As the world marked Valentine’s Day on February 14, Ghana’s Parliament added a uniquely local flavour to the celebration.

In Ghana, February 14 is not only associated with romantic love but also celebrated as National Chocolate Day.

In commemoration of the day, Ghana’s lawmakers marked the day by sharing chocolates among each other.

In a series of pictures shared on social media by the Parliament of Ghana, lawmakers were seen being presented with baskets of chocolate bars as part of the day’s activities.

More images showed Members of Parliament joyfully displaying their chocolate gifts.

Several MPs, including Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Dorcas Affo-Toffey, were among those featured in the posts, receiving and enjoying their chocolate treats.

The Chocolate Day (known as National Chocolate Day) is a celebration instituted by the Ghana Tourism Authority in 2005 to coincide with Valentine's Day.

It is an annual initiative introduced to promote the consumption of locally made chocolate and cocoa-based products and to make Valentine’s Day healthy and culturally rooted.

The celebration aims to boost domestic chocolate consumption, highlight the importance of Ghana’s cocoa industry, and link the sweetness of chocolate with love and affection.
