A Ghanaian butcher at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra has shared how much he makes daily from selling meat.
Speaking during his appearance on GhanaWeb TV’s 'Everyday People' program, Mohammed Nasir Abdul, popularly known as Nash, said that he earns between GH₵200-GH₵300 daily.
Originally from the northern part of Ghana, Mohammed explained that life in his hometown was so challenging that he felt compelled to leave and seek a better one in the city.
He recounted that at the age of 25, he departed from the north to Accra in pursuit of employment.
He further shared that he undertook various menial jobs until he was introduced to the profession of butchery, which he has been doing for the past 20 years.
"I was 25 years old when I left the north for Accra, and I'm currently 45 years old. The person who introduced me to this job has passed away. When I arrived here, things were not easy, but now I manage my own work. Initially, I stayed with my aunt who lived at Tudu; she took care of me until I found my current occupation,” he narrated in Twi.
As for daily earnings, Mohammed said, “When the market is favourable, I sometimes make between GH₵200-GH₵300 daily, but there are times when I make as little as GH₵150.”
Mohammed also said that his butchery profession has enabled him to support the education of his siblings.
"When I began this job, my goal was to educate my siblings. I worked diligently, and as a result, the sibling right after me has completed university and now works in Tamale. Another sibling has finished school at 'Temasco' and is currently employed in the Industrial Area," he told GhanaWeb’s Victoria Kyei Baffour.
