Hundreds displaced by tidal waves in Ketu South

Residents of Agavedzi and its environs, a fishing community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, have been displaced by tidal waves inundation.

About 67 houses have been submerged by the sea, leaving a total number of 521 people displaced with most of them living with families and friends.

Officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) together with the Ketu South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Eliot Edem Agbenorwu Tuesday visited the scene to ascertain the extent of damage to provide needed assistance to affected people.

The GNA gathered that electricity lines in the communities had been disconnected to avert any further disaster from occurring.

Mr. Divine Bosson, Volta Regional Director, NADMO, speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) disclosed that about half of the community had been submerged.

He said affected residents were asked to immediately evacuate to safer grounds, specifically the A.M.E Zion School, assuring them of support.

The MCE also promised to liaise with the police to provide security to the people at their safe haven.

He added that government was putting measures in place to extend the coastline to prevent any future disaster.

It is expected that extension work of the about 4.2km sea defense wall would be constructed to salvage the area from perennial tidal waves attacks.
