Assin Foso (C/R), May 28, GNA - The World Vision Ghana (WVG) in collaboration with the Plants Genetics Institute of the Council for Scientific Industrial Research (CSIR) has introduced a hybrid plantain in the Assin North and South Districts of the Central Region. The hybrid plantain is resistant to the "Sigatoga disease", which made the leaves of the plant to wither prematurely and produced larger plantain bunches.

Mr Francis Armo-Annor, Assin Area Development Programme Manager of WVG, disclosed this to Ghana News Agency in an interview at Assin Foso. He said WVG had embarked on an intensive education programme to encourage farmers to cultivate the hybrid plantain to improve their financial position.

The Area Manager said the organisation had established a demonstration farm train farmers on the multiplication of the plantain suckers, which are on sale to farmers. Mr Armo-Annor said WVG was also training farmers on grass cutter rearing and snail farming, adding that, 14 farmers and two senior secondary schools had benefited.

He said 144 beehives had been supplied to some schools and appealed to the youth to take advantage of WVG programmes to reduce poverty.
