?As they yearn for the repeal of the LAW of Willfully Causing Financial Loss To The State

A Large majority of Ghanaians interviewed by your authoritative ?The Ghana Palaver? last Wednesday, October 24, described the behind the scene lobbying and maneuvers by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to have the law Willfully Causing Financial Loss to the State repealed, as very hypocritical of the government, because while it is seeking the repeal of the law, it is at the same time, prosecuting some leading members of the former administration, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) with it.

According to a section of the public, it is surprising that at a time the NPP government led by Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor is prosecuting the former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, Mr. Tsatsu Tiskata, Hon. Dan Abodakpi, to mention a few, it is secretly trying to lobby political parties and their General Secretaries to agree to the repeal of the Law. The same law the government has used to jail some former Ministers of state.

Majority of interviewees warned the NDC not accept any underhand dealings with the NPP, because they would like to see the same yard stick used by the NPP for NDC former Ministers used for the current government as well.

Some of the General Secretaries interviewed on some of the local radio stations, categorically denied ever appending their signatures on any document with the intension of have the Law willfully causing Financial Loss to the state amended or having it repealed altogether.

The NDC Flagbearer, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, speaking on Radio Gold, Newspaper review programmed said, the decision to amend or repeal the Law must be subject to national debate for Ghanaians to understand and give their approval before such a move is taken.

He said it would be dangerous for any group of people to sit somewhere and think they can decide for the people of Ghana.

Prof. Atta Mills said some prominent citizens of this country were thrown into prison because of this law, some families in the country have had very traumatic experiences as a result of this law, why should we by the stroke of the pen, remove this law from our statute?

The NDC Flag bearer called for a national debate on the issue, adding, the NDC has not decided on the issue yet and therefore the decision taken at the IEA meeting can not be said to the party?s position on the matter.
