I Am Proud Of Ghana - Kofi Annan

UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan says he is encouraged by the high level of goodwill Ghana enjoys in the international community. He is also impressed with the current democratic dispensation and the rule of law in the country and urged all Ghanaians to support the government in its endeavour to strengthen democratic rule in the country. The UN Secretary General said he has, therefore, come home to discuss with the government, areas in which the UN and the international community can be of further assistance to the country. “It is really wonderful to be here. It is always important to come to one’s roots for inspiration to work in the bigger environment”.

While in the country, Mr. Annan hopes to discuss with President Kufuor issues relating to the UN Peace-keeping operations, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), African conflict problems and the general global trends. He will also travel extensively to the countryside to see for himself the level of development, especially in the rural areas. “I have come here to see to what extent I can be of help in the country’s development efforts”.

Welcoming the UN boss, President Kufuor said Ghanaians are happy that as an illustrous son of Ghana, Mr Annan has come home to share his rich experiences with his compatriots. “We are happy that he has been observing the progress of the government. The President revealed that through the instrumentality of the UN boss, India is to build an Information Technology Centre of Excellence in Accra. “We are happy that Mr Annan has proved to be a dedicated compatriot”.

President Kufuor stressed that the nation is deeply proud of “this illustrious son who is leading the world body”. Ghana, the President said, “wants to share your experience with the rest of the world”. He assured Mr Annan that while here, the government, which has close affinity with him, will discuss all matters openly with him. “We will not hide anything from you”.

Before calling on the President, Mr Annan had had separate meetings with both the Majority and Minority parties in Parliament.
