The 2016 flagbearer of the People’s National Convention, Dr. Edward Mahama has said he did not need approval from his party members before accepting the ambassadorial position from President Akufo-Addo.

According to him, he was first approached with the offer in January this year, and only mentioned it to his 2016 running mate. He opined that position was not an agreement with the government and his party, hence there was no need to seek their permission before accepting it.

Dr. Mahama noted that his new position does not in any way violate his own party’s regulations, and would not derail his political journey either.

Meanwhile, the newly appointed ambassador-at-large has said that his position will not affect the government financially.

He argued that his position could bring some benefits for the country, and such the risks or otherwise involved were no doubt thought through by the president before his appointment.

Speaking to Class FM on Tuesday, Dr. Mahama stated: “ I’m sure the president has calculated what I’m going to do for him and it is worth it and as I said, any opportunity, especially regarding the initial discussions I had with the president, for me, it’s good because I don’t think I would burden Ghana. I will be an Ambassador who will make things better for Ghana in whatever role he asks me to do. I’m not somebody who wants to burden Ghana at all.”

He further argued that the new role is an opportunity for him to serve the country, like he could never have, describing it as a “service to God, Ghana and President Akufo-Addo.” He reemphasized that his acceptance of the position was not a sign of disrespect to his own party’s leadership.
