The King and Overlord of the Gonja Traditional area, Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa (I) has appealed to the two major political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to maintain the peace enjoyed by the inhabitants of the Damongo Constituency of the Savannah Region.

The Yagbonwura reminded the two parties that there are other political parties in the Damongo Constituency aside the two who are are calm hence should be emulated by the NPP and the NDC.

Speaking behind a close down meeting with the leadership of the two parties, Yagbonwura Borasa Tutumba (I) ordered the two parties to ensure peace before, during and after the 2020 polls scheduled to take place in December.

The Overlord of Gonja summoned leadership of the two parties to his Palace on Monday 6th July, 2020 following clashes between supporters of the two political parties in the Constituency as a result of the ongoing registration exercise leading to the deployment of military personnel into the Constituency to maintain law and order.

Briefing the media after the meeting with the political parties, head of the regional security committee (REGSEC) who is also the minister in charge of the Savannah Region, Hon. Salifu Adam Braimah said an emergency meeting between leadership of the two political parties to ensure that there’s peace in the Constituency but was quick to add that that the Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) will deal severely with anybody who attempts to disrupt the peace currently enjoyed by residents of Damongo.

He advised that any party that has issues with anybody coming into the registration centres should just pick up a challenge form, fill and submit to officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) instead of resulting to violence.

The Savannah Regional Chairman of the NPP Alhaji Sulemana Iddrisu popularly called Professor Kalamonia in an interview with Bole based Nkilgi FM denied the allegation by the NDC that the NPP is busing people into the Constituency to register.

Prof Kalamonia said the NDC allegation is never true since they can not identify all natives of the Damongo Constituency and again suggested that if the NDC suspect any person who is an alien, they should pick challenge forms from Electoral Commission and fill. He added that it was the NDC that started beating his people which he as the regional chairman will not allow happening the second time that made his people to fight back.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Damongo Constituency who Hon Adam Mutawakilu, accused the ruling NPP of busing foreigners to register in his the constituency which describes to be unprecedented since 1992 referring to the NPP as very desperate and assured the NPP leadership in the Constituency that the NDC will resist any attempt by any political party to bus any foreigners to register here in the Damongo Constituency.

Meanwhile, information gathered by Nkilgi FM says all political talk shows on radio in Damongo have been banned by the Overlord of Gonja Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa (I).
