I was childless for 14 years - Rev. Wengam

The Lead Pastor of the Cedar Mountain Assemblies of God Church, Rev. Dr. Stephen Yenusom Wengam, has said one of the difficult times of his life as a man of God was when for 14 years of marriage he and his wife were childless, but yet prayed for a childless couple and they were blessed with twins.

“It’s indeed very difficult especially where God has used you to pray for people that need children and you pray for them to have twins. Every year people attend Citi Fm’s family consecration service and God gives them children, you dedicate children every Sunday, officiate marriages and they’re giving birth like something and then I go back home and yern for one but God says wait,” Rev. Wengam said.

According to the Radio Pastor, that moment they had no child was baffling but what sustained them so strong was the faith they had in God and his word.

Rev. Dr. Stephen Wengam told Bola Ray on Starr Chat, Wednesday that his wife and him understood marriage as an institution for friendship, fellowship and not necessarily for producing children, but added that children are gifts from God to couples.

The former Chairman of the Prison Council advised couples to consider adopting children if they find themselves in a situation having no biological children because most orphans hold answers to prayers.

“I’ll encourage couples without kids to consider adopting children because these kids equally deserve the right to be loved and some of them holds the answers to our wealth problems.

“I never thought of giving up or going behind my wife, it never crossed my mind… I was prepared to die childless to make it to heaven. Look at the the problem in the Middle East, it was caused by Abraham because of his impatience. He couldn’t wait for God’s perfect will and sometimes, some of these short cut can create generational problems for your family,” Rev. Wengam added.

As the chairman of the Ghana Prisons Service Council the Project “Efiase”, which is a 10-year development plan of the Prisons Service took off. The aim of the project is to make prisons in the country and correctional homes places for reformation, rehabilitation and productivity rather than places for retribution only.

Born to the late Mr Matthew Wengam and Mrs Deborah Wengam, Rev. Wengam holds a BSc. Administration (Marketing) degree from the University of Ghana, Legon; a Diploma in Theology from the Northern Ghana Bible College, Kumbungu; Diploma in Clinical Christian Counselling, and a Master’s Degree in Theology from the International Theological Seminary, USA.

Rev. Wengam who hails from Paknatik in the Bunkpurugu Yoyoo District of the Northern Region has worked as a pastor, youth leader, campus Christian fellowship leader, and has been Associate Pastor for several branches of the Assemblies of God Church in the country.

He is also the West Africa Coordinator of Global Leadership Training, USA; a Board Member of Meaningful Life International; Patron of the Immigration Ladies Association of the Ghana Immigration Service, patron of the Korle-Bu Youth Choir and Campus Pastor of the Assemblies of God Campus Ministry.

Known as the ‘Bishop of the Airwaves’, Rev. Wengam is the host of This is your Day, a family morning devotion programme that runs from Monday to Saturday on an Accra-based radio station, Citi FM.

Rev. Wengam is married to Monica with two children.
