Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu
Minority Leader Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin has denied claims that he assaulted a police officer during the ‘Save the Judiciary’ demonstration held at Parliament House on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, and as monitored by GhanaWeb on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, Afenyo-Markin explained that, contrary to circulating reports, he was the victim in the incident and not the aggressor.
According to him, the viral video purportedly showing him attacking a police officer was confirmed by the Cybercrime Unit of the Ghana Police Service to be fake and AI-generated.
Afenyo-Markin reports to Police over alleged assault incident
“The police officer who assaulted me rather went ahead to file a case against me. During the demonstration, something happened and I quickly petitioned the police. I even called the IGP, who said they were reviewing the video. Later, I was invited, and the Cybercrime Unit verified that the viral video showing me assaulting a police officer was fake,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin said the investigation was handled professionally, and the police have since completed their report and submitted it to the Attorney-General’s office.
“The police did a professional and objective job. They were very fair. They saw what happened and prepared their report, which exonerates me. Some people may still want further digging, but that is because they wanted to come after me,” he stated.
He stressed that his conduct during the protest was peaceful and devoid of any aggression.
“I can tell you on authority that after assessing the video, cybercrime experts described my conduct as peaceful. There was no aggression on my part. The videos are there for anyone to see. So, when people want to spread propaganda and lies, they should think twice,” he indicated.
Afenyo-Markin said that he chose not to immediately respond to the Attorney-General’s Department when it requested a review of the case, saying the department had since asked for the original footage for its own assessment.
“When the Department of the AG wanted to do its mischief, I decided not to respond. They have now asked for the video so they can watch it themselves, which is good for me. In this country, the truth must prevail,” he said.
The Minority Leader further disclosed that three different camera recordings, each lasting about 30 minutes, were reviewed, and all confirmed that he did not attack any police officer.
“The truth is that the police officer hit me, and the video from the Police Public Affairs Department confirms it,” he stated.

He maintained that his actions during the protest were a form of expression and not an act of violence.
“My reaction was merely a protest against the officer’s conduct. I reject claims that I was the aggressor,” he indicated.
