Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Parliament
Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, has condemned the display of former Minister of Finance Ken Ofori-Atta’s photo in Parliament by the Majority Caucus, describing the act as unfair and damaging to the dignity of the House.
According to him, no court has found Ofori Atta guilty of wrongdoing and urged MPs to respect due process.
He added that the deliberate printing and display of the former minister’s picture during proceedings was inappropriate, especially at a time when the world’s attention was on the chamber.
Speaking on the Floor of Parliament on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, he said: “I will plead through my friend the Chief Whip to ensure that in future any such actions are curtailed, controlled, or stopped by him so that this House will get peace.”
Afenyo-Markin further warned that if such conduct continues, it could set a dangerous precedent.
He disclosed that the Council of Elders had questioned him about the incident, asking why the caucus allowed Ofori Atta’s image to be carried and labelled as corrupt in Parliament.
“Mr Speaker, if we don’t stop it, a certain precedent will be set. Today, the council of elders summoned me: ‘Markin, what about the Caucus? They carried his picture of Ken Ofori-Atta and called him corrupt. What is the NPP also doing?’” he said.
He assured Ofori Atta’s family, particularly his brother Duke Ofori-Atta, who is also an MP, that he was taking the matter seriously. He explained that Duke had persistently raised concerns about the impact of the attacks on the family, prompting him to rush to the chamber to make his plea.
“I don’t intend to litigate it, but I’m pleading with the Chief Whip and the Majority leadership that enough of Ken Ofori Atta’s name in this chamber, and the persecution and the attack on his reputation.”
“He is a human being, a Ghanaian. He has a wife, children, extended family, and, nonetheless, a brother who is a sitting member with us,” he urged the Majority leadership.
