Deputy General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress [NDC], Kofi Adams has stated his resolve not to allow the former Spokesperson for the erstwhile Armed Forces Revolutionary Council [AFRC] Major [Rtd] Boakye Gyan to contest the Jaman South constituency seat on the ticket of the ruling party.

Major Boakye Gyan on Monday filed his nomination to contest the Jaman South parliamentary seat in the Brong Ahafo - a seat he is sure he would win.

But his candidature has raised some eyebrows within the NDC as the party’s Deputy General Secretary is contesting Major Boakye Gyan’s eligibility to contest the seat.

Speaking via phone on Adom TV’s morning show, BADWAM on Multi TV, Mr. Adams said the former AFRC member is not qualified to contest the Jaman South seat on the NDC’s ticket since he does not meet the party’s constitutional requirement which states that prospective MP candidates should have been active members of the party for at least for 2 years.

He insisted that he “will do everything possible to resist his [Boakye Gyan] candidature because of his criticism of the NDC party as an illegitimate party because it was borne out of PNDC.”

“If it is true that Mr. Boakye Gyan has seen that the NDC is a very good party that he wants to join, he should come and join and work for the party for us to see that he is a true member of the party. He cannot come and join the party today and then tomorrow we’ll go and make you a parliamentary candidate, we cannot honour you like that” Mr. Adams stated adding that there is no way he would personally vouch for the candidature of Boakye Gyan as a parliamentary candidate of the NDC.

But responding to Mr. Adams’ comments on the same program, Osahene Boakye Gyan said he was not moved by the NDC Deputy General Secretary’s stance on his candidature stressing his preparedness to contest the seat.

According to the ex-military officer, he wants to contest the Jaman South seat because he identifies with and believes in President Mills’ ideologies.

“I know President Mills to be an Nkrumahist and I am an Nkrumahist true and true. I cannot sit down for the so called founder Jerry Rawlings and his wife who are determined to destroy Mills and his government to succeed” he said adding that his candidature will help shape up the NDC towards victory in 2012.

According to Major Boakye Gyan, “nobody should pay attention to what Kofi Adams says about me. Look at Kofi Adams’ records, there is nothing successful about it. What has he achieved in life? He is only an employee. At least I have ruled a country before”.

Although Mr. Gyan would not state categorically if he indeed is a member of the NDC, he told show host, Kwadwo Asare-Baffour Acheampong that he had submitted evidence of his membership to the team that would vet his application.

But Mr. Adams says he is convinced Major Boakye Gyan would not succeed at the vetting.
