I will willingly step down as president on January 7 – Akufo-Addo assures

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that his last major task as president will be to ensure that the pending general elections on December 7, 2024, is free, fair, and peaceful.

Speaking at an event with senior citizens to mark the 2024 Founders' Day on Monday, August 5, 2024, in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said that like other presidents in Ghana's 4th Republic, he will step down after his second term ends, as required by the 1992 Constitution.

"I will willingly step down as president on January 7, 2025," the president is quoted to have said by graphic.com.gh.

It continued that, "I intend to ensure that our reputation as the beacon of democracy and stability in Africa and the world is maintained."

He added, "I do so because I will be in good company, that of Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, who, in the fourth republic, have been privileged by the people of Ghana to serve two terms as President of the Pepublic."

President Akufo-Addo also said that despite numerous economic challenges, the country has made progress under his government.

He pointed out that in the last seven years as president, he steered the ship of state through the deeply troubled times of the COVID-19 pandemic and the challenges it brought.

"It's been a very difficult time, but I believe most of us can see that we are now turning the corner and returning our economy to normalcy and reviving growth – the growth that made our economy one of the fastest-growing economies in the world in the years prior to the outbreak of the COVID pandemic," he said.
