Breku (Ash), Feb 1, GNA - Mr Patrick Kwarteng Acheampong, Inspector- General of Police (IGP), has ordered the placement of a twelve-hour checkpoint at Breku, near Asankare, in the Asante-Akim South District to help check the increasing spate of armed robbery in the area.
The order comes barely two weeks after the Juaso Police engaged some highway robbers in a fierce gun-battle in which one of the robbers was shot killed and two others arrested. The checkpoint is among other measures aimed at reducing the crime rate on the Konongo-Nkawkaw highway, especially the Breku forest section.
Aside being a perennial destination for highway robbery, the Breku forest section of the Accra-Kumasi Highway is also noted for its high incidence of accidents. Superintendent Francis Agrippa Oppong, Juaso District Police Commander, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the IGP had augmented the Juaso Police with a highway team. He explained that the Breku forest section of the Konogo-Nkawkaw highway was not only secluded from town but also had no mobile network coverage, hence becoming a fertile ground for armed robbery activities.
