IGP calls for effective supervision

Accra, Aug. 11, GNA - The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Patrick K. Acheampong on Thursday said all Senior Police Officers within the Accra-Tema Regions should note that they were on probation for the next three months.

He said that during the period, failure on the part of any officer to exercise expected supervision and discipline would lead to their administrative transfer from Accra and Tema.

The action would be aimed at paving way for other Senior Officers to take command positions in Accra-Tema to ensure the protection of life and property.

A statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr David Eklu, of the Public Relations Directorate, said the IGP said after four months in office, he was not satisfied with the output of some of the officers in Accra and Tema.

"This lackadaisical attitude is affecting the conduct of the men and women under them."

He also urged the officers to concentrate on the core Police functions of protecting life and property, and desist from acts that tended to create a dent on the image of the service. The IGP said, notwithstanding some problems personnel faced, they should strive to be professional and work hard to justify the efforts. Mr Acheampong directed stringent traffic enforcement and charged Motor Transport and Traffic Unit (MTTU) personnel to work hard to ease traffic congestion in the Accra and Tema areas and other parts of the country.

He said the enforcement of traffic regulations would prevent road accidents and also minimise the number of people who perished on the highways.

He urged all District, Divisional and Regional Commanders to get involved in all operational patrols. The IGP gave the assurance that the Police would not relent in its efforts to provide security and safety to all persons and their properties.

He cautioned officers to ensure effective supervision of their personnel to ensure that they performed their duties well to win the support and goodwill of the public. The IGP said the Police Administration would continue to organise regular courses for personnel to deal with emerging crimes. He commended resource persons, who were currently taking 30 personnel in basic Police skills in an on-going course in intelligence gathering.

He further warned that those caught in illegal motor checks and extortion of money from motorists would be strictly dealt with according to the tenets of the Service.
