IGP urges calm amidst explosives probe

The Ghana Police Service is assuring Ghanaians, as well as the international community, to remain calm as it investigates the matter of seizure of some explosives.

Inspector-General of Police, David Asante-Apeatu, at a press conference yesterday, stated that the police believe the objects to be a type of grenades, and investigation is underway to establish the nature of the objects seized.

He noted that the seizure is the result of police intelligence-led operations, and added that it is working together with the relevant agencies to get to the bottom of the matter as stake.

“Our investigation seeks to answer questions such as whether these persons are terrorists; whether they have linkage with any terrorist group; how they obtained the objects, their sources, potential allies and more,” he assured.

The IGP indicated that scores of investigators and specialists have been dispatched to various locations, and the police are treating that move with all the seriousness it deserves.

The police announced the launch of an official website on January 25 this year, which would provide quick and timely information concerning the police and their activities to the public.

Accused persons are Ismaili Ali Musah, Abdul Karim and Osmani Alhassan, who were arrested in Accra Monday morning.

The police prosecutor said the explosives are of military nature.

The court was adjourned to January 30, 2018.

The Odorkor Divisional Police Command, upon a tip-off, conducted operation at Agape Down and arrested 30-year-old suspect Abdul Kariam, a notorious land guard and armed robber, with seven pieces of hand grenade.

Suspect Abdul Karim led police to Kata Hostel, around Nyamekye where his source of supply, Ismail Ali Musah, aged 31, was arrested, along with Osman Alhassan, 33 years, his Malian friend.

During interrogation, suspect Ismail Ali Musah, who claimed to be a member of ISIS in Syria, admitted having sold some arms and ammunitions in the Ghanaian community already.
