Prampram (Greater Accra) 22 Jan. '98 The Prampram Queenmothers association in the Greater Accra Region advised women to insist on the registration of their marriages. This is part of measures being adopted by the association to ensure the legitimacy of all marriages in the area and to curb the incidence of men abandoning women and their children. Naa Gyebi Addicelley the first, secretary of the association said the decision was taken at a two-day consultative meeting at Prampram in view of the hardship most women of the traditional area are going through. Naa Gyebi, who is also Asafoanye of Anaerwe, said a survey conducted by the association had indicated that about 75 percent of married women in the area have no certificates of their marriages. This, she emphasised, has accounted for child and teenage pregnancies in the traditional area. It is against this background that the association has decided to ensure that women should insist that their marriages are registered to protect them and their children. Naa Gyebi hinted that the association also compiling a list of all men who have abandoned their children for necessary action to be taken against the. This is to ensure that every child of school-going age enjoy the government's free compulsory universal basic education she stressed. gri
