IPS students injured in demonstration

Accra, Sept. 8, GNA - Ten students from the Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) in Accra on Friday sustained various degrees of injury from rubber bullets fired by the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) of the Ghana Police Service during a demonstration at the school premises. A peaceful demonstration at the premises of the Institute on Friday morning turned violent when the Police started firing rubber bullets, tear gas and spraying of hot water canon at the demonstrating students. The students were demonstrating against an injunction placed by the Madina Magistrate's Court on the removal of the President of the Student's Representative Council (SRC), Mr Francis Kyei.

The demonstration was also said to be against the Institute's authorities for issuing a directive that would make all resident students non-resident by November 1, 2006 for renovation works to be carried out at the various halls of residence.

However, the students are not happy with the arrangement saying their examinations would start at the middle of November. Meanwhile, calm has returned to the IPS campus.
