Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has issued a stark political statement, stating that he might consider voting for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2028 general elections if the current conduct of the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) continues unchecked.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, October 4, 2025, Kpebu expressed concern about alleged cases of human rights abuse by the Bureau, warning that such actions could undermine the moral standing of the current administration.

“No, the NPP can’t win 2028 unless something like what the NIB is currently doing goes on and on maybe 20 or 30 cases. Oh, then that one, if the NIB continues on this trajectory for maybe another 10 cases, it’s possible I can vote for NPP. But I’m sure with this, Kipo will be well warned that he should assert himself and stop abusing human rights,” he stated.

Kpebu argued that the only circumstance under which the NPP could regain public favour would be if there is ‘extreme misgovernance’ under the John Mahama administration within the next three and a half years worse than what occurred under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“The only way Bawumia’s candidature will be legitimised is when the NDC performs worse beyond what Akufo-Addo did and I doubt that will happen,” he said.

Drawing an analogy, the lawyer compared Ghana’s political cycle to returning to a past relationship when the new one disappoints.

“It’s like going back to your ex-girlfriend when the new one performs worse. You eat humble pie and apologise that’s how voters returned to Mahama because Akufo-Addo couldn’t perform as much as JM,” he indicated.

Kpebu further noted that Ghana’s evolving civic awareness exemplified by President Mahama’s recent engagement with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) shows that the public is now more vigilant and less tolerant of poor governance.

“You see, the President had to meet the CSOs; it tells you Ghana has changed,” he said.
