Ignore Rawlings' statements - Govt

Wed, 9 Apr 2003 Source:

THE government has decided to treat the statement made by former President J. J. Rawlings at a press conference in Accra on Monday “for the little that it is worth.”

This was contained in an official release in Accra, titled: "A Leopard Does Not Change Its Spots - JJ Rawlings", signed by Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, Outgoing Minster of Information and Presidential Affair

“It is the hope of the government that the former President’s statement will be treated for the little that it is worth,” a statement signed by the outgoing Minister of Information and Presidential Affairs, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, said in Accra yesterday.

It said instead of using the opportunity to preach peace and unity in the country, the former President chose to stir up ethnic sentiments, rubbish the electoral process in an unfortunate attempt to undermine the democratic exercise and whip up unnecessary disaffection against the government.

The statement described former President Rawlings’s press statement as a “mixture of fiction, fantasy and ill-will against democracy generally and persons in his own party, especially.”
