Illegal AASU Congress

Mon, 30 Jul 2012 Source: --

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional integration have released an amount of Fifteen Thousand Four Hundred Cedis (GHC15, 400) to a group of student apparatchik to organize a secret AASU congress slated for 29th July – August, 2012 at the International Conference Centre.

In a letter dated 27th June, 2012 and signed by Mrs. Florence Akonor (Deputy Director), the Ministry stated among other things for the organizers of this congress “to invite as many Unions as possible in order to ensure the attendance of an overwhelming majority of the AASU’s membership at the congress”. As at now, out of the 52 membership of this union, only three (3) countries have arrived and yet the congress is coming forth. The organizers have ignored the concerns of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and are going ahead to organize the congress with only six countries.

The All African Students Union has since 2000 not organize congress due to the parochial interest of some executives of the past. It is because of this phenomenon that the foreign Ministry has offered to help but again personal parochial interest has taken precedence over the interest of African Students.

These groups of individual have reduced the number of countries in order to share the six positions in AASU for themselves and not even their countries. Countless protest letters have been written to the Secretariat of the All Africa Students Union but all to no avail. As concern students of Africa, we have decided to bring this anomaly to notice of the public and galvanize students support to stop this secret congress or to undo it if they insist on going on with their illegal congress.
