Illegal miner remanded for stealing

A Tarkwa circuit court on Tuesday remanded a 24-year-old illegal miner, Fatau Animu, into prison custody for stealing 300 Ghana cedis and a mobile phone valued 100 Ghana cedis.

The accused pleaded guilty to stealing and conspiracy and will re-appear on January 29.

Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Edward Paddy told the court presided by Mr. Justice Obeng Asante that, the complainant is a sawmiler working at Kawierekwanor in Tarkwae.

He said on January 13 the complainant was going home and on reaching the Peace Royal International School near the University of Mines and Technology campus, Animu and his accomplice, Issah Anabi, who has gone into hiding, emerged from a nearby bush.

Chief Inspector Paddy said the accused and Anabi followed the complainant to a distance and snatched his Samsung mobile phone and 300 Ghana cedis.

He said a witness who saw the Animu and Anabi while they were attacking the complainant, chased them and got hold of the accused but Anabi’s accomplice escaped.

Chief Inspector Paddy said the complainant and the witness took the accused to the police station where the stolen mobile phone was later retrieved during investigation.
