The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Security Council has set in motion a crackdown on illegal mining activities along the River Pra, arresting four individuals and destroying their equipment.

The operation, led by Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, District Chief Executive, aims to protect the environment and ensure the well-being of citizens.

In an interview with GHOne News, Mr. Nyantakyi highlighted the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining. “We are dedicated to eradicating galamsey activities in the district, but we need a collective effort to achieve success,” he said. He emphasized the logistical challenges facing the district assembly, including the lack of life jackets and speed boats to pursue illegal miners on river bodies.

Hon. Nyantakyi appealed to all Ghanaians, particularly those dependent on River Pra, to join the fight against galamsey. “The battle requires a collaborative approach, transcending political affiliations and geographical boundaries,” he stressed. He emphasized that the fight against galamsey is not a political issue, but a collective responsibility to protect the environment and ensure public safety.

The District NADMO Coordinator, Richmond Addai Marfo, attributed frequent flooding in the district to galamsey activities along riverbanks and in residential areas. He underscored the importance of addressing the issue to prevent further environmental degradation and ensure public safety.

The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Security Council’s initiative shows forth a proactive approach to combating illegal mining. However, sustained support from all stakeholders is crucial to achieving lasting success in the fight against galamsey.
